Colour diamonds.Diamonds Can Add a Little Colour

When we think of diamonds, we usually envision a colourless stone that sparkles when the light shines upon it. That may be the case for a traditional diamond, but today you are no longer restricted to certain colours when it comes to diamond shopping. Coloured diamonds have actually been around for centuries, but have only recently become a popular fashion accessory – particularly amongst the rich and famous.

Due to their scarcity and popularity, natural fancy coloured diamonds are rare and are often very highly valued. The more accessible and affordable option are colour enhanced diamonds. These diamonds are real natural diamonds that undergo a special colour enhancement process in order to attain their brilliant colours. The process of colour enhancing a diamond consists of two steps. As part of the first step, the diamond’s atomic structure is rearranged in a way that activates its colour center by using electron irradiation. This is followed by annealment, a process where diamonds are heated to temperatures of 900 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. As a result, a nearly colourless stone will obtain a beautiful multitude of colours. Different temperatures during the heating process lead to various colours. The colours resulting from enhancement are permanent and do not change over time.

From engagement rings, to necklaces, bracelets, earrings and broaches, there are many great ways to wear your coloured diamonds. Recently, yellow and pink diamonds have gained large popularity and are commonly used in engagement rings as centre stones.

Colour enhanced diamonds come in a variety of colours: yellow, red, pink, green, blue, purple, black and any shade in-between. Colours that are difficult to produce (ie. purple and pink) are purchased at a higher price point versus those diamond colours that are fairly easily to create (ie. black).

Given that diamonds are extremely durable and do not damage readily, they are the best alternative when choosing the most long-lasting and fashionable stone.
