Loose round diamonds.Diamond Carat Weight: The Heaviest Consideration

DEFINITION: Carats are the unit of measure used to determine a diamond's mass. In technical terms, carat weight follows a standardized point scale. One carat consists of 100 points and equals to 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams.

How this affects your decision:

In simple terms, the higher the carat weight, the more expensive a diamond becomes.

Contrary to popular belief, the carat weight of a diamond does not refer to its size, but rather to its actual weight. Carat weight does affect the size of the diamond, because generally speaking the heavier the diamond, the larger it is. But, depending on the cut, it is possible for two stones to have the same carat weight even if one looks smaller than the other.

The biggest reason why carat weight is such a factor in price is because heavier diamonds are much harder to find. But, you should know that while heavier diamonds are extremely rare, all diamonds are very rare in general. Thousands of tons of ore must be processed to find even a single 1 carat stone... making every diamond a cherished revelation.
