Married couple holding hands with wedding rings.Ring Sizing

Just as there are many diamonds to consider, one of the last most important factors is the size of the ring on a woman’s finger. Imagine popping the question or giving a special anniversary ring only to discover that she can’t wear it right away. Don’t let this happen.

There are a few sneaky ways you can find out her ring size without ruining the surprise. One way is to very sneakily borrow one of her rings from her jewellery box and to bring it to Gold Craft Jewellery so that we can determine the size. Or, if she is a heavy sleeper you could always wrap a thread or paper strip around the base of her finger and marking the point of contact. A third option is to confide in one of her close friends or family members. Ask the one who is most able to keep a secret to take her shopping one day and try on rings “just for fun”.

The friend can then discover her ring size. If you’re not afraid to bring her engagement ring shopping at Gold Craft Jewellery, we can of course measure her finger during your visit. For future reference, of course. (wink, wink)

The point is that you want to order or select a ring that is ready to wear, so you should also plan on purchasing the ring at least two weeks before making any plans for the marriage proposal, because the ring may need to be sized to fit her finger. This could take a week to ten days, depending on holidays, etc. The jeweller must prepare it and needs the proper lead time to work his magic and ensure the proper fitting for your surprise.

As a rule of thumb, you should not size a ring two sizes lower or two sizes higher than the standard size that is found in stores. If she has an extra small or extra large finger, then a special order should be done so that you don’t compromise the quality of the setting. This is especially true for rings that have side stones, which could be shifted if too much sizing has changed the overall integrity of the ring. Special orders definitely work well because your ring will be tailor made to fit her finger.
